The coat of arms was originally approved for the 116th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion on 30 January 1956. It was redesignated for the 254th Artillery Regiment on 2 June 1961. It was redesignated for the 254th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on 10 July 1972. The insignia was redesignated for the 254th Regiment with the blazon and symbolism revised on 6 June 1997.
